The mayoral candidate says the spirit of the ANC is in the townships and people are happy again

Port Elizabeth – The ANC’s Nelson Mandela Bay mayoral candidate, Danny Jordaan, was optimistic, confident and bolstered by the spirit of the party in the region, he said on Monday.

Meanwhile, the main opponent in the region, the Democratic Alliance, was confident it had done enough to win the hotly-contested metro in Wednesday’s elections.

“What I see is that we have good reason to be very confident. There is just a new spirit,” the Nelson Mandela Bay mayor said after visiting Zwide, Motherwell, and Uitenhage in the past two days.

Jordaan said the spirit of the African National Congress was in the townships and people were happy again.

Supporters were happy to put on ANC T-shirts, to work without asking for a reward, and to sing and dance in support of the party.

“I think that, given what I observed, we have very good reason to be optimistic and positive,” Jordaan said.

DA mayoral candidate Athol Trollip on Monday said they had done all they could as a party to win the Bay, and now it was up to the voters.

“I am not arrogant enough to say the DA will get 51%, because our work now depends on voters coming out and deciding who they are going to vote for,” he said.

His challenge between Monday and 07:00 on Wednesday would be to ensure that everyone voted who wanted change, he said.
